My Morning Self-Care Routine That Actually Helps Me Feel Like Myself

I'm definitely not someone who wakes up at 5 AM, runs five miles, drinks green juice, and meditates for an hour.

I've tried that version of a morning routine before...and it lasted about three days.

Instead, I've found that the best self-care routine is one that's actually realistic. Little habits that make me feel more awake, more put together, and less like I'm rushing through the morning.

These are the things I've slowly added into my mornings over the past few years, and together they genuinely make a difference.

If you're looking for some easy ideas to romanticize your mornings without making them feel like a chore, here's exactly what my routine looks like.

I Wake Up Slowly Instead of Being Jolted Awake

The biggest change I ever made was getting rid of the blaring phone alarm.

I switched to a sunrise alarm clock, and waking up has honestly become so much easier. Instead of instantly being shocked awake, the room gradually gets brighter before the alarm goes off. It feels so much more natural, especially during the darker months.

The First Thing I Do Is Drink Water

I always keep a glass bedside carafe on my nightstand so I don't have an excuse to skip water first thing.

It's one of those tiny habits that makes a bigger difference than you'd expect. Before I even check my phone, I finish a glass of water and instantly feel a little more awake.

If I know I have a busy day ahead, I'll mix in a packet of my favorite everyday electrolytes to help me stay hydrated.

I Spend Five Minutes Waking Up My Face

While my coffee is brewing, I grab my ice roller from the freezer.

It feels amazing if I didn't sleep well, helps with morning puffiness, and honestly just feels refreshing.

While I'm using that, I'll usually put on a pair of eye patches for a few minutes while I get everything else ready.

It's not necessary, but it's one of those little luxuries that makes getting ready feel a little more relaxing.

Cozy Clothes Make Mornings Better

I don't immediately get dressed. I like staying in comfy clothes while I ease into the morning.

These pajamas are incredibly soft, and I almost always throw on this lightweight striped robe over them while I'm making breakfast or doing skincare.

And I never skip my fuzzy slippers because my floors are freezing year-round.

Then I Head Into My Skincare Routine

Before washing my face, I pull my hair back with one of those oversized makeup headbands.

It's such a small thing, but it keeps my hair completely out of my face and somehow makes the whole routine feel a little more spa-like.

I start with a gentle face wash before spraying my face with hypochlorous acid spray.

I've been loving this because it's gentle enough to use every morning and leaves my skin feeling fresh.

After that, I keep my skincare pretty simple:

Vitamin C gives my skin a little extra glow, moisturizer keeps everything hydrated, and sunscreen is the one skincare step I refuse to skip even if I'm staying home.

My Dental Routine Is Non-Negotiable

I know brushing your teeth isn't exactly revolutionary...

But upgrading my toothbrush actually made me more consistent. An electric toothbrush leaves my teeth feeling way cleaner than a manual one ever did.

I also started using a tongue scraper every morning, and once you get used to it, it's hard to skip. It's one of those habits that only takes about ten seconds.

I Make My Morning Drink

Some mornings it's coffee. Some mornings it's both coffee and something with a little extra hydration.

Lately I've been mixing up an energy & vitamin drink mix before I start working, because It gives me a little boost without feeling overly intense.

If I'm making coffee to take with me, I almost always use my Owala travel mug because it actually keeps my coffee hot for hours and never leaks in my bag.

I Journal Before Looking at My Email

This has probably been the biggest mindset shift for me.

Instead of immediately opening work emails or scrolling social media, I spend a few minutes writing.

Sometimes it's gratitude or a brain dump. Sometimes I'm just writing down everything I need to remember that day. There are no rules.

Getting everything out of my head helps me start the day feeling less overwhelmed.

I've been using this journal because it's simple enough and guided so that I actually reach for it every morning.

Then I Plan My Day

After journaling, I open my planner, and I don't make elaborate color-coded schedules.

I just write down my priorities for the day, appointments, and anything I absolutely need to accomplish.

It keeps me focused without making me feel like I need to have every minute planned out (but it's also super cute)!

My Favorite Part About This Routine

None of these things are life-changing on their own. But together, this morning self care routine makes me feel a whole lot calmer than I used to be.

They help me wake up slower, take care of myself before jumping into work, and start the day feeling like I've already done something good for myself.
